Wallet Recovery

In One Sentence

Wallet recovery restores the ability to access or authorize assets using the recovery mechanism appropriate to the wallet’s design.

Definition

Wallet recovery is the process of reestablishing access after a device is lost, software is removed or a signing arrangement becomes unavailable. For a conventional self-custody wallet, this often involves a recovery phrase and any required passphrase. Other wallets use recovery shares, trusted guardians or a provider-managed account process. These methods are not interchangeable.

How It Works

Recovery reconstructs credentials or changes authorized control according to predefined rules; the coins remain recorded on the network. Correct backup words may also require compatible account derivation and network support. A recovered interface showing no assets can reflect a wrong account path or passphrase rather than proof that funds disappeared. Do not experiment by entering secrets into random online tools to resolve that uncertainty.

Key Considerations

Use verified wallet software and the documented recovery procedure. Confirm the restored receiving address or account before moving significant amounts. Recovery cannot normally reverse completed transfers, and restoring an exposed seed does not remove an attacker’s access. If keys were stolen rather than merely lost, a new secure authorization setup may be needed. Anyone promising guaranteed recovery without the required credentials should be treated cautiously, especially if they demand upfront transfers or ask for unrestricted access to the wallet.
