Definition
A trading pair connects a base asset with a quote asset. In the common BASE/QUOTE format, the first asset is being priced and the second measures its value. The pair therefore describes an exchange relationship, not two independent purchases.
How It Works
For example, a hypothetical ETH/USDT price of 2,000 means one ETH exchanges for 2,000 USDT before costs. Buying the pair generally means acquiring ETH with USDT; selling means exchanging ETH for USDT. ETH/BTC instead measures ETH in BTC, so its movement describes relative performance between those assets.
Key Considerations
Check the pair before submitting an order. Different quote assets create different price exposure, liquidity, and fees. A rising crypto-to-crypto pair does not necessarily mean either asset is rising against a fiat currency. Similar ticker symbols also do not prove that two tokens are the same asset.
