Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC)

In One Sentence

Wrapped Bitcoin is a tokenized representation of bitcoin designed to be backed by one BTC for each WBTC.

Wrapped Bitcoin, or WBTC, represents bitcoin in smart-contract ecosystems. It launched on Ethereum in 2019 as an ERC-20 token and is now available across multiple networks. Its intended backing is one BTC held in custody for each WBTC, allowing applications to use bitcoin exposure through a token interface.

Minting and redemption

Authorized merchants coordinate the minting and burning process with authorized custodians. BTC deposits support the issuance of corresponding WBTC; redemption involves burning WBTC and releasing BTC through that arrangement. This is different from a permissionless contract that lets anyone directly unlock native BTC. Access, fees and processing depend on the service used.

Uses and added dependencies

WBTC can serve as collateral or enter liquidity pools where the specific token is supported. Those uses add application risks, such as liquidation or contract faults, to the risks of holding bitcoin. Custody, redemption operations and any additional bridging route also matter.

Backing is not a market-price guarantee

Published reserve addresses and mint/burn records help assess backing, but do not eliminate operational or counterparty risk. Market prices can diverge from BTC. Verify the network and exact token contract, and distinguish owning WBTC from directly controlling BTC on the Bitcoin network.
