In One Sentence

A trading terminal is an interface for viewing market information and managing trading instructions and account positions.

Definition

A trading terminal brings price charts, market quotes, order entry, and account information into a working interface. It may run in a browser, desktop application, or mobile app. Some terminals connect to a single exchange; others route instructions to several supported venues through authorized connections.

How It Works

The user selects a market, reviews data, and submits an instruction such as a limit order. The terminal sends the request to the trading venue and displays the returned status. Order history, executions, and open positions can appear in separate panels because a submitted order and an executed trade are different events.

Key Considerations

A terminal is not itself a guarantee of live data or execution. Connection delays, stale prices, permissions, or venue rejection can affect what happens after a button is pressed. Before resubmitting an uncertain request, check its order status to avoid duplicates. Charts and account figures may use different price references or update intervals.
