In One Sentence

Sentiment analysis evaluates expressed opinions and market signals to estimate attitudes toward an asset or market.

Sentiment analysis evaluates expressed opinions and market signals to estimate how positively or negatively participants view an asset or market. In crypto, it can examine social posts, news, surveys, search interest, and market-based indicators rather than directly measuring an asset’s underlying value.

Turning observations into measures

A text-based system may classify posts as positive, negative, or neutral and aggregate those classifications over a defined period. Other approaches combine signals such as volatility, trading activity, or derivatives positioning into a sentiment score. Different sources, weights, and models can produce different results for the same asset.

For example, a rise in positive posts after a product announcement may indicate enthusiasm among the sampled accounts. It does not establish that all token holders agree or that those accounts have actually bought.

Reading the limits

Bots, promotional campaigns, repeated posts, sarcasm, and language differences can distort a text-based measure. Market indicators can also reflect hedging or mechanical liquidations rather than a simple opinion about future prices.

Sentiment may influence prices and respond to them, making cause and effect difficult to separate. Extreme optimism is neither proof of continuing gains nor an automatic sell signal. Useful interpretation requires the sampling method, timeframe, and broader market context.
