Recovery phrase is commonly another name for seed phrase or mnemonic. It describes the backup’s purpose rather than a separate type of blockchain asset. Many wallets use BIP39 words, while other systems have different formats or multiple backup shares. The number of words alone does not establish compatibility between two wallets.
How It Works
Recovery reconstructs signing credentials; it does not retrieve coins from a device. The blockchain still holds the asset records. A replacement wallet may need the original phrase, an optional passphrase, the right derivation paths and support for the relevant network. In a multi-share backup, enough valid shares must be supplied according to its threshold. Restoring with an incompatible format or a different passphrase may fail or show different accounts.
Key Considerations
Keep an accurate backup and verify it using the wallet’s trusted procedure before relying on it. Do not test a backup by entering it into an unknown website. A recovery phrase is not a one-time code and should not be given to customer support. Reinstalling an application does not invalidate an exposed phrase. If someone else has obtained the required recovery secrets, simply restoring the same wallet will not remove their access; a secure migration may be needed.
