Genesis Block

In One Sentence

The genesis block is the initial block from which a blockchain’s history and later block references begin.

Definition

A genesis block is a blockchain’s starting block, typically designated height zero. It provides the initial reference for the chain rather than pointing to an earlier ordinary block. Its contents and handling are defined by the network’s initialization rules, which may differ from those governing subsequent blocks.

How It Works

Node software must agree on the chain’s starting conditions to interpret later history consistently. Depending on the protocol, initialization may also establish balances, parameters or other initial state. Bitcoin’s genesis block was created in January 2009 and is associated with Satoshi Nakamoto. Other networks have their own genesis definitions; reusing software does not necessarily mean sharing a chain’s identity.

Key Considerations

A genesis block can be useful for distinguishing networks and checking synchronization settings. Special behavior at genesis should not be generalized to normal blocks. A chain can share early history with another network and later diverge through a fork, so genesis alone does not identify every later rule set. Claims about launch allocations should be verified against the specific network’s initialization data, not inferred from the term genesis.
