Definition
In crypto, “ticker” often means a symbol such as BTC. In trading systems it may instead refer to a pair or a stream of prices and statistics. The intended meaning should be distinguished from a full asset name or a unique blockchain contract address.
How It Works
A venue might identify a spot market as BTC/USDT and a derivative using an additional product suffix. Its ticker response can include last price, bid, ask, and 24-hour activity, depending on the service. Those fields describe different measurements and should not all be treated as executable prices.
Key Considerations
Symbols are not globally unique: unrelated tokens can share abbreviations. Verify network, contract address where relevant, venue, and product type before acting. A familiar symbol alone does not establish an asset’s identity, authenticity, or equivalence to a similarly named market elsewhere.
