Token Generation Event (TGE)

In One Sentence

A token generation event marks a project-defined stage at which tokens are created or made available for initial distribution.

Definition

A token generation event (TGE) refers to the creation or initial release of a project’s tokens. The label is used differently across projects: it may describe contract deployment, allocation availability or the start of token distribution. Those events do not necessarily occur at the same moment.

How It Works

The project establishes supply and allocation rules, and eligible participants receive or claim tokens under the announced process. Portions may remain locked and become available gradually. Trading can begin separately, depending on actual market support and transfer restrictions.

Key Considerations

A TGE is not automatically a public sale, an exchange listing or the date when every allocated token becomes liquid. Announced schedules can change, and a displayed token price does not imply that all holders can sell at that price. Check the exact event definition, official contract, circulating supply and vesting terms. The term itself says nothing about legal classification, project quality or future demand and should not be used as shorthand for guaranteed market access.
