Definition
A testnet provides a testing environment separate from a blockchain’s mainnet. Developers and users can try transactions, contracts or upgrades using test assets rather than intentionally risking production funds. It may imitate important mainnet behavior, but its participants, state and operating conditions are different.
How It Works
Wallets and applications select the test network through the appropriate configuration. Test assets are often distributed through faucets or development tools. Networks may be reset, deprecated or changed as testing needs evolve. A local development chain and a public testnet are both useful testing environments, but they differ in who operates them and how widely they are shared.
Key Considerations
Test assets are generally intended for testing rather than investment, and access to them should not require exposing a production recovery phrase. Testnet success does not prove production security or performance. Differences in liquidity, demand, validator behavior and configuration can change results. Keep production keys and funds separate, and do not assume a contract at a familiar address has the same code on every network.
