Shitcoin is a vulgar, dismissive label applied to a cryptocurrency that someone considers worthless, poorly designed, or driven mainly by speculation. It is an opinion expressed through slang, not a technical token category. Different communities apply it differently, sometimes even to established assets they dislike.
What the criticism may concern
The speaker may be criticizing an unclear use case, weak development, concentrated insider holdings, misleading promotion, or a price supported chiefly by hype. Those are separate claims that require evidence. Calling a token a shitcoin does not demonstrate fraud, and a low price per token does not establish low total value because the circulating supply also matters.
A meme coin is defined by its association with memes or internet culture; it is not automatically interchangeable with this insult.
Reading the term in context
Some traders use the word jokingly about their own speculative holdings, while others use it to attack competing projects. The tone can therefore range from self-mockery to hostility. A neutral assessment examines what the asset does, who controls its supply, and whether it can be traded at meaningful size. The label alone predicts neither a price collapse nor a profitable rebound.
