In One Sentence

An OTC desk is a trading service that arranges negotiated transactions outside a public order book.

An over-the-counter, or OTC, desk is a service that arranges trades through direct negotiation or a quotation process outside the public order book. It is often used for larger transactions where the client wants a quote for a specified total amount.

From inquiry to agreed trade

The client specifies the asset, direction, size and settlement needs. The desk responds with pricing and terms, through a dealer or an electronic request-for-quote system. Requesting a price is different from accepting an executable quote; the confirmation process and quote validity matter.

A whole-order quote can simplify comparison with buying or selling through several order-book levels. However, its price may include a spread, and separate charges may apply. The relevant comparison is the total amount paid or received under equivalent settlement conditions.

Settlement and counterparty checks

The service may require funds in advance or allow another agreed settlement arrangement. Cash and crypto can settle through account balances, bank payments or blockchain transfers, depending on the service.

Clients still need to verify the counterparty, official communication channel and delivery instructions. Eligibility and identity checks vary. An OTC desk does not remove counterparty risk, transfer delays or the possibility that an indicative quote changes.
