In One Sentence

A mainnet is a blockchain’s production network, where its live ledger and assets operate under the network’s actual rules.

Definition

A mainnet is the operational production network of a blockchain, as distinct from a testing environment. Transactions there can affect assets with economic value and may be difficult to reverse. Mainnet describes deployment status; it is not certification that the software is mature or free of vulnerabilities.

How It Is Used

Users and applications submit transactions through software configured for the appropriate network. Chain identifiers, endpoints, addresses and supported assets help distinguish it from other environments. A project’s mainnet launch may introduce an independent network or require migration from an earlier representation, depending on its design. Such migration is not implied for every launch.

Key Considerations

A wallet may display similar addresses across several networks, but their balances and contracts can be different. Users should verify the destination network and asset before sending funds. Testnet coins are not automatically redeemable for mainnet assets. Successful testing does not guarantee safe production behavior, where value, congestion and incentives differ. Mainnet availability also does not prove that a particular exchange supports deposits or withdrawals on that chain.
