FUD stands for “Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt.” Crypto communities use it for anxiety about an asset, project, or market, and for messages believed to create that anxiety. It can refer to deliberate misinformation, exaggerated claims, or an ordinary reaction to uncertain events.
How the label is used
A rumor that an exchange cannot process withdrawals might trigger selling before anyone verifies it. If the rumor is fabricated to influence behavior, calling it FUD describes a manipulative tactic. If withdrawals really are failing, however, the same label can be used to dismiss a legitimate concern.
The speaker's attitude therefore matters: “that's FUD” expresses a judgment about information, not proof that the information is false.
Separating claims from evidence
Useful checks include identifying the original claim, its date, the evidence provided, and independent confirmation. An official response helps establish a project's position but is not automatically a complete rebuttal. Uncertainty can remain after reasonable investigation. Recognizing emotional or promotional language should support evaluating the underlying facts, rather than automatically buying, selling, or ignoring criticism.
