In One Sentence

FOMO is the fear of missing out that can push someone to buy or trade because others appear to be profiting.

FOMO stands for “Fear of Missing Out.” In crypto markets, it describes the anxiety that a profitable opportunity is passing by, especially when prices rise quickly or social feeds fill with other people's gains. The feeling can turn a considered decision into an urgent attempt to catch up.

How it affects decisions

A trader might abandon a planned entry price, increase a position beyond their intended budget, or buy an unfamiliar token after seeing repeated endorsements. Rising prices attract attention, and that attention can bring more buyers, reinforcing excitement for a time. This feedback does not establish the asset's value or ensure that demand will continue.

Screenshots usually reveal selected outcomes rather than everyone's costs, losses, or timing. Buying the same asset later can produce a very different result.

Recognizing the pressure

FOMO names an emotional influence, not a trading signal or a diagnosis. An investment can rise after a hesitant buyer stays out, but that possibility does not make every urgent purchase sensible. Checking the original information, defining position limits, and comparing a purchase with an existing plan can make the decision less dependent on a crowd's excitement.
