Faucet

In One Sentence

A faucet distributes small amounts of a crypto asset, commonly testnet coins used to try network functions without production funds.

Definition

A faucet is a service that gives users a small quantity of a coin or token under defined conditions. Testnet faucets help developers and learners obtain assets needed to pay test-network fees. Historically, faucets have also distributed small amounts of mainnet assets for education or promotion.

How It Works

A user submits a destination address and may complete rate-limiting or anti-abuse checks. The service sends a limited allocation if its rules and available balance permit. On a testnet, those units are used within that testing environment; they are not automatically convertible into the equivalent mainnet asset.

Key Considerations

A faucet does not need a user’s private key or recovery phrase to send funds to an address. Requests for such secrets or unrelated wallet approvals are warning signs. Availability and claim limits can change, and receiving test assets is not evidence of a future reward or airdrop entitlement. Confirm the intended network before use, because a familiar address format does not make balances interchangeable across networks.
