Buy Wall

In One Sentence

A buy wall is a relatively large concentration of resting buy orders at a price level in an order book.

Definition

A buy wall appears when the bid quantity at one level, or a narrow price range, is large compared with surrounding orders. It may come from one participant or many independent buyers. On a cumulative depth chart, the concentration often creates a steep increase on the buy side.

How It Works

For market sells to trade below an existing wall, the relevant bids must be filled or removed. This can temporarily absorb selling, which is why traders may view the level as potential support. A wall represents displayed willingness to buy, however, rather than completed buying or a commitment to hold an asset indefinitely.

Key Considerations

Orders can be canceled, moved, replenished, or rapidly consumed. A large displayed wall therefore cannot guarantee a price floor, and its size does not reveal the owner’s intention. Evaluate its persistence alongside actual executions and broader liquidity; an order-book snapshot alone cannot establish manipulation or predict the next price move.
