In One Sentence

Bitcoin Core is open-source software that validates Bitcoin transactions and blocks and can also provide wallet functionality.

Definition

Bitcoin Core is an implementation of the Bitcoin protocol used to run a full node. It checks blockchain data against the rules enforced by the installed software rather than accepting another service’s statement about which transactions are valid. The project also includes optional wallet features.

How It Works

A node connects to peers, downloads and validates data, and relays accepted transactions and blocks. Users can connect compatible applications to their own node. Initial synchronization and continued operation require computing, storage and network resources, with requirements affected by configuration. Pruning can reduce retained block data after validation.

Key Considerations

Running Bitcoin Core does not automatically mine bitcoin or earn rewards. The software project is not a company that controls every participant’s funds, and its developers cannot unilaterally force the network to accept rule changes. Users choose which software to run. Verify software releases through the project’s official distribution and verification process, maintain appropriate backups for wallet data, and distinguish independent validation from the separate responsibility of protecting private keys.
