BEP-20

In One Sentence

BEP-20 is the fungible-token interface standard used on BNB Smart Chain, derived from Ethereum's ERC-20.

BEP-20 specifies a common interface for token contracts on BNB Smart Chain, or BSC. Derived from ERC-20, it supports balance and supply queries, transfers, approvals and spending allowances. Compatible applications can use familiar contract methods to work with these tokens.

Standard versus network

BEP-20 names a token standard, although transfer menus often use it as shorthand for the BSC network. A withdrawal must match the receiving service's supported network and asset. An address that looks valid on Ethereum does not establish that a deposit on BSC will be credited.

BNB and token balances

BNB is BSC's native asset for network fees. Holding a BEP-20 token is separate from holding native BNB; an ordinary token transfer generally needs BNB for gas. The contract determines the token's issuance and any additional controls, so BEP-20 compliance does not guarantee reserves, unrestricted transfers or a fixed supply.

Historical names need care

BEP-2 belonged to BNB Beacon Chain and is a different standard. Beacon Chain shut down in December 2024. Older BEP-20 explanations discussing routine transfers between the two chains describe a historical arrangement, not a reason to assume those transfer routes remain available.
